2019 Historic Preservation Awards
Residential Property
Andrzej and Katerina Poetek 75 Cook Street The 2019 Historic Preservation Award for a Torrington residence is being given to Andrzej and Katerina Poetek for their meticulous restoration of their home at 75 Cook Street. The Poeteks bought the house in June 2015. Years ago, it was the home of Frederick Fuessenich, a major figure in local history. The home’s construction date is unknown, but evidence indicates that the house dates to the early 1860s. The house has all the classic features of Italianate style, most notably the ornate corner tower. Before the Poeteks acquired it, the house was slated to be demolished for a parking lot, and having survived, the house was in dire need of rescue. The interior had been stripped of many original elements, and major structural upgrades were needed to make the building safe and habitable. Andrzej and Katerina were undaunted and resolved to bring the unique house back to life and have done extensive interior and exterior work to restore this home well. |
